How to Determine your Skin Type

Determining your skin type is extremely important when shaping a healthy and beneficial skin care regime.  There are many factors that contribute to your skins type.  Exposure to the sun and pollutants, your diet, how much exercise you get, your stress levels and the change in seasons all play an integral part in the health of your skin – consider these when deciding what catergory you fall into.

Using products that are made for your skin type may help to alleviate symptoms of dry or oily skin, maintain health of normal skin and will help to fight the signs of aging with any skin type!  Questions about what products are right for you?  Visit us here.

To accurately assess your skin type follow these 4 easy steps

  1. Completely cleanse your face and pat dry
  2. Wait at least 20-30 minutes.  It is important to give your skin some time after you have cleansed to be sure that results you see and feel are not just a reaction to your cleansers or the water.
  3. Examine your skin closely in the mirror.
  4. Gently press a clean tissue to each of these areas:  center forehead, outer forehead, nose, chin, outer cheeks.  Examine each tissue for signs of flaky skin or oily residue.

Does your skin feel tight?

Yes, all over tightness and flakes on my tissue – Dry skin

Yes, in certain areas – Normal to Dry or Combination skin

No, not at all – Normal to Oily skin

Do you see any oil?

Yes, very noticeably on the tissue – Oily skin

Yes, only in parts (T-Zone) – Combination skin

No, not at all – Dry or Normal skin

Dry Skin feels tight and may have a rough texture or appearance and small looking pores.

Normal Skin has neither significant dryness nor oiliness, with a clear complexion and small to medium sized pores.

Oily Skin usually feels greasy with a shiny appearance, tends to be acne or blemish prone with large visible pores.

Combination Skin typically involves oiliness in the T-Zone (forehead, nose and chin areas).  Your cheeks are normal or slightly dry and may occasionally have blemishes.

Sensitive skin may have redness, broken capillaries, any size pores, and you may feel heightened sensations when the skin is touched or with certain topical products.
