Is it bad to sleep in your makeup?

It’s been a long day and you decide to just go to bed – without washing off your makeup from the day.  If this only happens once in a while, well, we’ve been there too and you’re probably okay.  However, if this becomes a habit you should really rethink your bedtime routine. makeupsleep

Did you know our skin has its own schedule?  During the day – when our skin is exposed to environmental pollutants, irritants and UVA/UVB rays – the skin is working diligently to provide a moisture barrier and produce sebum as a defensive layer.  At night our skin allows all those defensive systems to shut down, bringing more oxygen to the surface of the skin and renewing our appearance (that’s real beauty sleep!).

One of these night-time routines for our skin is called transepidermal water loss.

Transepidermal Water Loss is defined as the measurement of the quantity of water that passes from inside a body (animal or plant) through the epidermal layer (skin) to the surrounding atmosphere via diffusion and evaporation processes.  -wikipedia

This process allows our skin to purge the particles, bacteria and miscellany that collects on the surface of the skin throughout the day.  Wearing your makeup to bed prevents this process from working efficiently by blocking the skin and interrupting the body’s natural routine.  wash-your-face

Additionally, makeup can harbor bacteria and grime – keeping these nasty germs close to your skin. When your makeup starts to breakdown these germs can cause stress on the skin, cause damage and may lead to premature aging with fine lines and wrinkles, sensitive skin, dry skin or even a breakout!

Need a good cleanser to wash away all that grime and grit?  We recommend the Peau de Fleurs Cleansing Mousse – This Advanced Dual Action Cleanser thoroughly washes away impurities and exfoliates while maintaining critical moisture content with natural moisturizers, allowing for radiant, glowing skin. Formulated with pharmaceutical grade ingredients that are extracts from natural sources such as the Comfrey Plant and Tamarind Seed, which is highly regarded for significantly improving skin elasticity, hydration and smoothness.
