3 ways to soothe dry, chapped skin

We feel cold, but we don’t mind it, because we will not come to harm. And if we wrapped up against the cold, we wouldn’t feel other things, like the bright tingle of the stars, or the music of the Aurora, or best of all the silky feeling of moonlight on our skin. It’s worth being cold for that. ~Philip Pullman, Northern Lights

Winter is a beautiful time of year.  Unfortunately my skin doesn’t have the same attitude about the cold temperatures and biting wind.  The constant fluctuation between the cold  outdoors and the dry, warm heat of the indoors deals havoc on our skin.  To combat these conditions we have 3 ways to feed, heal and deeply nourish the skin.

Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate

“Dehydration makes your skin look more dry and wrinkled, which can be improved with proper hydration” –Kenneth Ellner, Dermatologist, WebMD

Water is essential for your complexion and your health, make sure you are getting the recommended 5-8 glasses per day.  Remember, alcohol depletes the water in your body, so if you imbibe this holiday season, drink even more water!

Moisturize

Lipids perform by locking natural moisture into the skin. Lipids work best when applied soon after soaking, bathing, or showering. At this time, your skin will retain some of the moisture from the water, and a lipid-based moisturizer will provide a barrier to excessive moisture loss.

dry eyeAreas of the body should be treated differently, the thin, sensitive skin around your eyes is not the same as your legs because of tissue and fat layers that lie underneath.  Get specialized nourishing products to really focus on your problem areas.  Our favorite for the eyes and face are found here.  A great recommendation for the body is this one.

Vitamin Boost

RAO-New-Packaging-SmallStarting from the inside, out we need to provide our bodies with vitamins that will amp our skin’s ability to renew itself with protective antioxidant vitamins, and restore moisture for fewer fine lines or damaged skin.  Omega 3’s, Avocado oils and Vitamin C infuse needed nutrients into the skin allowing for radiant, glowing skin all winter long.  2-3 times a week boost the health of your skin with a night-time treatment of RAO essential oil that will help to restore much needed hydration to the skin.

3 things that destroy your skin

Did you know that skin damage can happen even in the cold winter months?  Check this out from www.skincancer.org:

“It’s easy to associate winter with frostbite and windburn, but most people are unaware that UV rays can be every bit as damaging on the slopes as on the beach,” said Perry Robins, MD, President, The Skin Cancer Foundation. “With the winter sports season ahead of us, it’s more important than ever to take proper precautions on the slopes.”

The top 3 skin destroyers you need to know about:

#1 – Free Radicals

UV exposure is the main contributor to premature aging and http://www.dermatology.com goes as far as to say this- “UV radiation is one of the major creators of free radicals. Free-radicals are unstable oxygen molecules that have only one electron instead of two. Because electrons are found in pairs, the molecule must scavenge other molecules for another electron. When the second molecule looses its electron to the first molecule, it must then find another electron repeating the process. This process can damage cell function and alter genetic material. Free radical damage causes wrinkles by activating the metalloproteinases that break down collagen (see #3). They cause cancer by changing the genetic material, RNA and DNA, of the cell.

#2 – Glycation

“When you have sugar molecules in your system, they bombard the body’s cells like a meteor shower—glomming onto fats and proteins in a process known as glycation. This forms advanced glycation end products (commonly shortened, appropriately, to AGEs), which cause protein fibers to become stiff and malformed…The proteins in skin most prone to glycation are the same ones that make a youthful complexion so plump and springy—collagen and elastin. When those proteins hook up with renegade sugars, they become discolored, weak, and less supple; this shows up on the skin’s surface as wrinkles, sagginess, and a loss of radiance. The presence of AGEs also makes the complexion more vulnerable to bad-news assailants such as UV light and cigarette smoke.” www.Elle.com

When dealing with glycated skin conditions, it is essential to remember that the skin needs products that have anti-inflammatory ingredients and that will hydrate the compromised cellular structure of the dermis.

# 3 – MMPS: Collagen-eating enzymes

Enzymes activated by inflammation, often caused by UV exposure, MMPs (Matrix metalloproteinases) destroys the skins support structure which leads to sagging skin, lines and wrinkles.  MMPs help to keep collagen levels in balance, without these enzymes damaged collagen and elastin would accumulate and lead to skin blemishes.

Why am I breaking out?

Acne is an unfriendly, unkind and a devilish foe we’d like nothing more than to banish forever.  But, what if our breakouts were trying to tell us something about our bodies?

The skin is the largest organ in our bodies, perhaps it’s trying to communicate with us.  Face Mapping isn’t a new technique, it’s actually been around for centuries.  It follows the principle that our body is totally interconnected and certain muscle groups and nerves communicate directly with each other…  So Listen Up!

acne-face-map

So, the next time you feel a break out coming on or have a blemish pop up at the more inopportune time, look to your face map: your skin may be trying to tell you something about your body. However, remember that, as with all medical issues, it is always best to see your doctor or dermatologist for a proper diagnosis. This is only a general guide to help you naturally, ayurvedically, set you in the right direction – just because you break out between the brows doesn’t always mean you have a bad liver!

The difference between Dry Skin & Dehydrated Skin

Do you know the difference between Dry and Dehydrated skin?  Take our mini-quiz to find out!GSModel

1. Which one is a Skin Condition?

2. Which is a result of a lack of internal moisture?

3. This condition is a type like “Problematic/Oily” or “Combination”.

4. _____________ causes makeup to settle into fine lines and wrinkles.

5. Crinkly, fine lines are a result of this: ___________.

ANSWERS:

1. Dry Skin is a Skin Type; Dehydrated skin is a Skin Condition

Your skin type is determined by how much — or how little — oil your skin produces.

2. Dehydrated Skin is the result of a lack of water.

“Dehydrated skin results from lack of internal moisture, whereas dry skin is from insufficient or reduced sebum production, from natural aging or health issues” says Anna Sforza, Director of Education at Somme Institute (ref: DaySpa Magazine, Jan2014).

3. Dry Skin is a classification like “Oily Skin” or “Combination Skin”

4. Dehydrated Skin causes makeup to settle into fine lines and wrinkles, causing those pesky crinkles to stand out instead of blend in.

5. If noticing dry, wrinkly patches show up suddenly on your skin causing your skin to look like crinkled paper, likely, your skin is very dehydrated.

Now that you know the differences, how do you combat dehydrated skin?  Hydration!  Both internal and external hydration is best.  Drinking 6-8 glasses of water a day and applying a balanced moisturizer twice a day to clean skin.  Taking these simple, yet effective steps, year round is the best way to achieve beautiful, glowing skin.  Winter skin can be the result of weeks or months of hydration neglect combined with cold air outside, dry warm air inside, additional alcohol consumption, and too-hot showers.

Skinfood Ultra Vital

Gerda Spillmann’s Skinfood Ultra Vital is indeed vital to helping to balance the skin’s pH and keep hydrated skin year-round.  This silky anti-aging moisturizer helps restore vitality and youthful elasticity to the skin with botanical ingredients including Tamarind Seed Extract, Swiss Edelweiss, Wheat Germ Oil and Apricot Kernel Oil. GS New YearHappy New Year!

What were your resolutions this year?  Did taking better care of yourself make the list?  Our outward appearance show us signs of our internal health.

Some outward signs to be watchful for include:

Circular skin discolorations

Any area of the skin that dramatically changes colors in a short period of time can be a cause of concern.  From easily bruising to Velvet Plaque these can be serious signs of internal imbalance and you should speak with your primary care doctor about your concerns as soon as possible.

Flushing or skin redness

If your skin has started to appear more flushed, have a red cast or even appear to have a rash you could be seeing initial signs of Rosacea, Dermatitis or even Lupus.  If you have this skin concern, immediately seek help from a doctor.

Raised bumps or scaly skin

If you have raised, bumpy skin that appears reddish or purple in color this could be a  sign of Hepatitis C.  Other bumps, often found on the hands, can be an indicator of cancer.  Try not to scratch these areas even if they are itchy and immediately seek medical help.

Doctors studying Cancer create a New All Natural Essential Oil Blend to alleviate many skin conditions

GS Products, who has brought the industry Gerda Spillmann, and Quintascent LLC will be working together to bring NovaMoist to the Beauty and Skin Care Industry. This All Natural product helps to eliminate dry skin and may help to alleviate many inflammatory skin conditions while soothing and moisturizing the skin.

Developed by two physicians, Dr. Carlton and Dr. Safra, and inspired by centuries-old Tibetan remedies, NovaMoist is a blend of 100% pure essential oils. Made of 8 essential oils, Lavender, Rose, Geranium, Clary Sage, Bergamot, Juniper, Fennel and Sesame Oil, this unique and all natural formulation is anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and may provide rapid pain relief while restoring moisture to the skin.  NovaMoist contains no chemical additives, synthetic fragrances, petroleum derivatives or animal products; it is completely natural.

NovaMoist was created eight years ago when Dr. Robert M. Carlton, M.D., board certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology and a Fellow of the American College of Obstetrics joined forces with Dr. Tamar Safra, a medical oncologist on the faculty of University of Southern California. They were searching for a natural solution in bringing relief to skin discomfort experienced by cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy and radiation treatments. The doctors extensively reviewed the pathology of many of these skin problems. After completing their research, Dr. Carlton and Dr. Safra created a natural, safe and unique blend of natural essential oils that soothed, moisturized and brought immediate and sustained relief to the skin conditions they set out to alleviate.

With only one to two drops of NovaMoist applied to the skin, the natural oils can provide quick and long-lasting relief to many skin conditions, inflammatory problems and chronic skin issues.

May Benefit The Following Skin Conditions or Symptoms:

• Itching and Burning

• Pre and Post Menopausal Dry Skin

For most applications, one to two drops of NovaMoist is all that’s needed, three times a day for three weeks initially. To maintain beneficial results, NovaMoist should then be applied three times a week or as often as needed.

5 Fall & Winter Skin Care Tips

At both the offices in the United States and Switzerland we have seen a dramatic shift in the weather and a big drop in the temperature.  The cold and blustry days of winter are fast approaching and we want you to be prepared with 5 of our favorite tips for treating and protecting your skin.

#1 – Moisturize More

The skin’s moisture content is one of the most important factors you should pay attention to.  Not just because hydrated skin stays younger looking longer, but also because properly nourished skin fights uncomfortable dryness, tightening, cracking, and some painful skin conditions such as Eczema.  Find a moisturizer that is right for you but look for quality ones that also have an essential oil in them – this good for your skin oil creates a barrier layer, helping to protect the skin.  We recommend any of these 100% Pharmaceutical grade moisturizers.

#2 – Keep using Sun Block

The damaging UVA and UVB rays from the sun don’t stop in the cooler months, they’re just as strong as they were when you were enjoying the day on the beach during summer.  In fact, some health professionals believe that the reflection of the sun in the glistening snow can actually increase the amount of dangerous rays you are exposed to. Slather on the sun block 30 minutes before going outside and wear your Bio Fond Foundation that has natural sun block performance ingredients in it.

# 3 – Continue to Exfoliate

Exfoliants help to remove dead skin that can make your appearance seem dull, block the pores, and prevent your products from being efficient.  Gently exfoliating the skin will help any moisturizers you use to absorb into your skin faster and deeper.  You may want to avoid using harsh peels, masks, and alcohol-based toners or astringents, all of which can strip vital oil from your skin if you are starting to feel dry. Have oily skin and want to keep using a toner?  Switch to an herbal based, alcohol-free toner.

# 4 – Heed the Heat

Sure we all crank on the heaters when Mother Nature is trying to freeze us out, but that dry, warm air is actually working against the health of our skin. Use a humidifier to pump more moisture into the air, which helps prevent your skin from drying out.  Also avoid hot water in the bath or shower.  Very hot water, while it may feel good temporarily, actually depletes your skin of the lipid barriers which protects the skin, making you feel worse later.  If your skin is very dry, painful or itchy you may want to consider applying additional essential oils to your skin before climbing into the tub to protect your sensitive skin from the chemicals in the water.

# 5 – Wear Gloves

A brisk walk around the block with your pooch is enough time to start losing hydration in your hands causing itching, cracking, redness and irritation.  The skin on your hands is thinner than on most parts of the body and has fewer oil glands. That means it’s harder to keep your hands moist, especially in cold, dry weather.  Wear gloves when you go outside!
